Frequently Asked Questions — Careers

1. What is the status of my application?
If you received an e-mail notification, we are currently considering your application. The hiring manager will contact you directly if we’re interested in scheduling an interview with you.
2. Is there someone I can talk to about this position?
Most of the details you’re interested in can be found by reviewing the job descriptions we have online; you can also find an informative description of the company and its history online. If you have questions that aren’t answered by the information provided on our website, make sure to bring them with you to the interview.
3. When do you expect to fill this position?
The time frame for filling a position varies by department and position. Sometimes our hiring needs are immediate, but we often take a long-term approach to hiring. We will be happy to discuss the time frame for a particular position when scheduling your interview.
4. How will I know if a position has been filled?
When a particular position has been filled, the column on the Careers Page indicating an opening will read “No” instead of “Yes.” If you didn’t hear from us and you’re still interested in a position, make sure to check back to see if another opportunity has opened up.
5. What is the salary range for this position?
JMP salaries are market-based and competitive for the publishing industry. If you have a salary requirement, be sure to include it in your cover letter. We’re happy to discuss the details of compensation during your interview.
6. What kind of benefits are available?
JMP hires exceptional people, and we offer exceptional benefits. For a summary of our benefits package, click here.
7. What do I wear to the interview?
JMP offers a very casual atmosphere, so you won’t see anyone in a suit while you’re here (well, maybe a customer). For your interview, wear what you will be comfortable in — business casual is always a safe bet. We’re much more interested in you than in your sense of style.
8. I heard I have to take a test …
If you are applying for a permanent position in the legal department, you will be asked to take at least one test and maybe two. Someone applying for a Legal Editor position will be asked to take an editing test, and someone applying for a Development Editor position will be asked to take both an editing and writing test. You will be provided everything you need to take the tests, and they will be completed on your own time, so you can take them at your own pace.
9. Does JMP have any opportunities for freelance or consulting jobs?
Sorry, not at this time.
10. Can I work from home?
Sorry, not at this time. JMP does not have a telecommuting program.
